Grimethorpe Colliery Band are delighted to announce Mark Glover as the band’s new Solo Euphonium.
Mark joins Grimethorpe after a spell with the WFEL Fairey Band. He is the assistant conductor of The Staffordshire Band and works for The Entrust Staffordshire Music Service.
Mark and his family returned home to the UK in 2021 after ten successful years abroad where he was the head of music in The English College, Dubai. Before that, he lived in Singapore where he was the Principal Study Lecturer of Euphonium at The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and euphonium tutor for the Singapore Armed Forces band. He also worked with a company called Music360 to help promote brass in the region. He was a founding member of The Lion City Brass Band which is still going strong and conducted by the brilliant Ignatius Wang.
As a soloist, Mark has performed around the world, including giving the world premiere performance of Zaidi Sabtu-Ramli’s euphonium concerto in Brazil. He has been a guest artist in the USA for two international tuba and euphonium conferences and in 2012 he was a finalist in the conference euphonium competition. He has performed to audiences that had never heard the euphonium before in places such as Brunei, Jakarta, the UAE and India.
Mark’s solo CD, titled ‘Hustle’ was described by euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead as “one of the more original and important euphonium CDs we have heard for a very long time!”. It was also one of the nominees for the 2021 4barsrest solo CD of the year.
Mark commented: “I’m very much looking forward to my future with the band and hugely grateful for the opportunity.”
Grimethorpe MD Steve Phillips added: “Mark is the first signing for the band since I took over and I couldn’t have wished for a better one. His dedication, skill and artistry all fit with what we are trying to achieve at Grimethorpe.”
Band Manager Richard Windle said: “Mark is a top-quality Euphonium player and we’re lucky to have secured his services at Grimethorpe. He’s fit in so well and is already wowing our audiences with his virtuosic Euphonium playing.”
