Originating from the Salvation Army in Sheffield, Ben began his musical journey at the age of 12 with the Carlton Main Frickley Band. During this formative period, he was a member of the inaugural National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain, where he received the award for outstanding achievement.
At 17, Ben joined the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band, performing in numerous high-profile contests and concerts globally. While at Grimethorpe, he pursued a Music degree at the University of Salford, studying under Howard Evans and Les Neish. During his time at university, Ben earned both the prestigious Harry Mortimer Soloist Award and the Roy Newsome Conducting Award in his final year recitals.
In 2014, Ben transitioned from Grimethorpe to become the Principal Eb Bass of the Black Dyke Band. His tenure there was marked by significant victories, including the British Open, the Nationals, the European, and the Yorkshire Area Championships. He also frequently performed as a guest soloist across the country and led numerous performance and conducting workshops.
In 2016, Ben began his role as a brass teacher at the Rochdale Music Service, where as well as teaching he also conducts the Rochdale Borough Youth Band and collaborates with various youth ensembles throughout Greater Manchester. Passionate about nurturing the next generation of brass players, he leads youth workshops nationwide.
By 2017, Ben became the musical director of the Pemberton organisation. In his inaugural year, he led the band to victory in both the First Section North West Area and National Championships, earning them promotion to the Championship Section. He subsequently guided the band to the National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. After a successful seven-year tenure with Pemberton, Ben took on his most recent role as Musical Director of the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
