The band celebrated a thoroughly enjoyable performance of the test piece ‘Fraternity’ by Thierry Deleruyelle at the British Open Championship. For many of our newer players it was their first opportunity to wear the famous pink shirts at a contest.
Under the inspirational leadership of Allan Withington we were delighted with our performance. 6th place from the judges and the Stanley Wainwright award for the ‘Best Soloist’ for our amazing principal cornet player, Roger Webster who was simply breathtaking.
Here are a few words that David Vernon Reed posted up yesterday about the playing of Roger Webster:
“… I have to give special mention to one of the soloists Roger Webster (Grimethorpe), his playing of the extensive cornet cadenza must have been one of the greatest performances heard in the history of this great contest, I just can’t imagine anything better, and I must say there were some others yesterday close to it too.”
